STARTING SOON:

Alverstone could be real McCoy

Tony McCoy

That Tony McCoy gets on the best horse available to him is pretty much a given. Who would not want the 15-times champion riding their horse?

So when his name appears next to a runner from one of the smaller yards it is something of a pointer in itself.

McCoy has only ridden for Lawney Hill five times this season but he has won on two of them and can make it three with Alverstone in the European Breeders´ Fund Mares' "National Hunt" Novices' Hurdle at Warwick. She was no match for Sparky May at Newbury last month, but that mare is looking very good, and this race looks an easier proposition.

Glenwood Knight has been a model of consistency having not finished out of the first three in six career starts (disqualified at Exeter after finishing first past the post in a novice hurdle in December 2008).

He was beaten on first run over fences, at Hexham in November, but that was over two miles and he has given the strong indication of being a staying type having won over three miles as a hurdler and can win the Music Magpie Beginners’ Chase at Uttoxter.

At Lingfield Park, Edith’s Boy can win the second division of the totepool A Better Way To Bet Handicap. Simon Dow has had only three runners in the last fortnight but two winners and a second points to the wellbeing of the yard.

Edith’s Boy is 3lbs better off for being beaten a length by Estonia over course and distance four weeks ago and, given that was his first race since August, there is every reason to believe that Edith’s Boy will come on for the run.

Most horses who have not won for over 18 months can be called a few names. And there may well have been times when William Haggas has run through the lexicon regarding Fury.
